Understanding whether you qualify for LASIK is the first step toward achieving clearer vision. Keep reading to determine whether LASIK could be your path to a glasses-free future.
Who Can Benefit From LASIK?
Generally, most patients may benefit from LASIK if they:
- Are an Adult: Patients over 18 can qualify
- Stable Vision: The same glasses or contacts prescription for at least one year.
- Have Good Health: Good overall health, with any underlying conditions well managed, is important before scheduling LASIK.
- Don’t Have Eye Problems: Serious eye problems, such as chronic severe dry eyes or eye diseases, require treatment before you can consider LASIK.
Our team conducts thorough evaluations to determine your eligibility. We evaluate factors like the severity of your refractive error (nearsightedness, farsightedness, or astigmatism.) In addition, we consider other important factors like the thickness of your corneas (the part of the eye Dr. Weinlander reshapes during LASIK) and pupil size to ensure LASIK is safe and effective for you.
What Conditions May Affect LASIK Candidacy?
Certain factors may impact your suitability for LASIK. For instance:
- Presbyopia: Age-related focus loss, or presbyopia, is normal, starting at around age 40. LASIK doesn’t correct presbyopia, so if you opt for LASIK, you’ll still need reading glasses around that age.
- Severe Refractive Errors: Severe refractive errors may not be correctable through LASIK. However, another procedure, such as refractive lens exchange (similar to cataract surgery, which replaces your lenses) could be right for you.
- Cornea Thickness: You need adequate cornea thickness to have LASIK. But, even if you don’t qualify due to thin corneas, you could be a candidate for another procedure, such as photorefractive keratectomy (PRK.)
During your consultation, we evaluate your needs to recommend the best path to improved vision.
