What Causes Eye Floaters?
Many eye conditions may cause floaters, but in most cases, they’re a normal result of age-related changes within the eyes known as posterior vitreous detachment (PVD.)
The vitreous (the gel inside the eyeballs) starts shrinking as the eyes age. It tugs on the retina at the back of the eye, and clumps of gel may come loose. Those clumps cast shadows on your retina, translating into floaters in your visual field.
Floaters caused by PVD are usually sporadic and may not be intrusive. However, for some patients, floaters become highly disruptive. That’s when you might consider treatment.
Laser Vitreolysis For Floaters
Laser vitreolysis is a noninvasive procedure that Dr. Weinlander performs conveniently in our Brookfield office. During treatment, light pulses break up the vitreous clumps causing your floaters, which can greatly reduce the visual disruption caused by floaters while significantly enhancing visual clarity.
Candidates For Laser Floater Treatment
The best candidates for laser vitreolysis have the following:
- Difficulty with routine activities due to floaters
- Persistent floaters lasting four months or longer
- Stable eye health with no threatening eye conditions like cataracts, retinal tears, or corneal clouding
- Reduced quality of life due to floaters
For floaters caused by other conditions, for example, a retinal tear or diabetic eye disease, Dr. Weinlander creates a personalized treatment plan to address the condition and effectively minimize the floaters.
