Your Eyes at 40
Age 40 is when people commonly begin to notice changes in their near vision. You may find yourself holding a book farther away or struggling to read small print in dim light. This is often the first sign of presbyopia, a normal part of aging where the eye’s lens loses flexibility. But this is just one of several changes that can happen around this time.
An eye screening at 40 can also reveal:
- Signs of glaucoma
- Early signs of cataracts
- Changes in the retina that could indicate early-stage age-related macular degeneration
- Symptoms of dry eye
Why Screening Is Important, Even Without Symptoms
These conditions are more common from mid-life onward, and they often have few (if any) signs in the early stages. You might still see well but have eye pressure changes, early lens clouding, or signs of retinal damage that are not yet noticeable.
A comprehensive eye exam at 40 can detect these problems now, when they’re most treatable. Early detection may allow us to slow or even stop the progression of eye disease.
What to Expect During Your Visit
When you come in for your age 40 exam, we will:
- Review your medical and family history
- Discuss any symptoms or concerns you may have
- Test your vision at near and far distances
- Measure your eye pressure to check for glaucoma
- Dilate your pupils to view the retina and optic nerve
You may need other tests based on your results. Our goal is to give you a full picture of your eye health, establish a baseline, and create a plan to keep your vision strong as you age.
